Doctors’ task force to be formed to counter ‘polio rumours’: Uzma

The Punjab Emergency Operations Centre for Polio Eradication has announced the formation of a doctors’ task force to combat rumours and misinformation surrounding the polio vaccine, enhance communication with parents, and bolster confidence in vaccination efforts. This decision was made during a workshop held at Services Hospital, attended by representatives of the Pakistan Paediatric Association (PPA) and senior medical professionals.

The workshop aimed to reinforce the vital role medical professionals play in the polio eradication campaign, with a specific focus on countering misinformation and addressing parents’ concerns about the vaccine.

Uzma Kardar, Punjab Chief Minister’s Focal Person for Polio, unveiled the formation of the doctors’ task force across the province. She emphasized that medical practitioners are among the most trusted sources of information for parents, making their involvement crucial for effectively addressing common misconceptions and rumors about the polio vaccine.

Kardar outlined how the task force would be backed by senior doctors and medical experts, who will disseminate evidence-based information and simple, consistent responses to common questions and concerns. This approach aims to strengthen vaccine confidence through direct engagement with caregivers via both traditional and digital platforms.

Khalid Parvaiz, Coordinator of the Punjab Emergency Operations Centre, highlighted the substantial progress Punjab has achieved in the fight against polio but stressed the necessity of maintaining vigilance against sporadic occurrences of positive environmental samples. He underscored the importance of sustained efforts and robust program implementation to fully eradicate the virus.

Parvaiz stressed that senior doctors and medical experts are pivotal in strengthening vaccine confidence and countering misinformation. His immediate goal was to transition from controlling transmission to the sustained interruption of poliovirus transmission. He announced that the next polio vaccination campaign would commence on September 21 in 13 districts, running for seven days in Lahore and four days in the remaining areas.

Parvaiz detailed the task force’s strategy to focus on identifying and vaccinating missed children, not merely counting them. The program will profile, map, and follow these children to ensure they receive the necessary vaccinations. Attention will be particularly directed towards transit populations, mobile and migrant communities, reverie zones, and hard-to-reach locations, given the challenges posed by population movement in reaching these areas.

He stressed the need for strengthened transit vaccination, community engagement, and district coordination as part of an integrated approach.

Lahore, with its large population and high mobility, was singled out for continued emphasis due to the complexity of the polio program in the region. Parvaiz emphasized that doctors, healthcare professionals, along with community and religious leaders, influencers, and frontline workers, must collaborate to bolster vaccine confidence.

He stressed that medical professionals can assist parents in understanding the safety and efficacy of the polio vaccine, addressing queries about potential side effects, and swiftly identifying and responding to emerging rumors and concerns. The workshop concluded with participants recommitting to enhance cooperation between medical professionals and the Punjab Emergency Operations Centre to ensure credible information dissemination, prompt resolution of misconceptions about vaccination, and comprehensive protection for every child through vaccination.
