Coco Gauff sees progress despite US Open exit

Coco Gauff's US Open title hopes came to an end on Thursday with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 loss to Elena Rybakina, but the American teenager remains optimistic about the progress she is making with her game. Speaking to reporters, Gauff, 22, stated that she had played almost every match on her own terms, except for the quarter-final, where she fell back into some old habits.

Despite the defeat, Gauff is eager to continue her hard work for another year or two, hoping to see where her game can take her in 24 or 25 years. Rybakina, who will become the new world number one from Aryna Sabalenka on Monday, maintained constant pressure on Gauff and secured the key moments in the match. Gauff acknowledged Rybakina's performance, saying it was a really good match, and conceded that it came down to a couple of service games in both sets.

The American has been on a roll over the last few months, reaching her first Wimbledon semi-final, winning the Cincinnati title, reaching the last four in Toronto, and having another deep run in New York. Gauff's father praised her for accomplishing so many great things this summer and encouraged her to strive for consistency and more opportunities to lift a trophy.
