Kaley Cuoco returned to her role as Penny for Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, the third-to-last episode of Season 1 of Big Bang Theory spin-off. The episode took the gang to war-torn Pasadena, where they were sentenced to death by firing squad by military judges. Stuart saved them by activating a quantum entanglement device, but Penny was accidentally transported with them and turned into a centaur.

Cuoco, who had a deep connection with Big Bang Theory creator Chuck Lorre, agreed to return to the role despite having no prior details about her character. She admitted that she was completely blindsided by the multiverse mechanics and told herself not to overthink it. The production was massive, with sets at both Warner Bros. and Universal, making filming feel like a Transformers movie.

Despite not being with her original Big Bang Theory co-stars, Cuoco found the crew to be familiar faces, giving her a sense of home. The centaur sequence was particularly challenging, and even Cuoco struggled to explain what she had filmed that day. Cuoco expressed excitement to see the final product and noted that Lorre was living out a sci-fi dream with this episode.
