Behind Secunderabad arms heist, ex-havildar who held grudge against commanding officer

In a recent arms heist at the 20 Madras Regiment in Secunderabad Cantonment, an ex-havildar is facing arrest after breaking into the armoury and stealing 12 weapons and ammunition, including four AK-203 assault rifles, seven pistols, and an INSAS rifle. The incident came to light during an inventory of the regiment's weapons, leading to a police complaint on September 1.

The ex-havildar, originating from Telangana's Nagarkurnool district, was dismissed from service on June 30. His motive for the heist was reportedly to seek revenge against his commanding officer. On the night of August 31, he entered the premises twice, claiming to be a member of the regiment, and managed to steal the weapons. The stolen items were hidden in thick foliage before being transported to Achampet.

The police, along with Military Intelligence, tracked down the suspect, who confessed after being confronted with technical evidence, including phone location and CCTV images. Three others are currently in custody in connection with the theft, and all recovered weapons have been returned. The investigation is still ongoing.
