At least 46,000 flee fighting in Yemen, says UN

GENEVA - A United Nations report has revealed that over 46,000 individuals have been compelled to abandon their homes due to the recent intensification of conflict in Yemen. This surge in displacement marks a significant increase from previous estimates, with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) noting that the number has more than doubled within a short period.

The root cause of this humanitarian crisis is the escalating battle between Iran-backed Houthis, who have dominated northern Yemen for years, and Saudi-backed government forces. The Houthi-led offensive has yielded multiple successes, resulting in numerous casualties.

As the fighting intensified, at least 46,000 people were displaced, according to a statement released by the IOM. This figure was previously reported at approximately 18,500, highlighting a rapid escalation of the crisis. The IOM's warning underscores the alarming rate at which the situation is deteriorating.

The Houthis recently took control of Mocha, a critical Red Sea port city, and seized a significant island in the Bab al-Mandab strait on Friday. In response, Saudi Arabia has launched numerous airstrikes, including recent attacks on Mocha airport, according to Houthi media reports. Displacements have been reported across the west coast and Taiz regions, with people reportedly leaving Mocha city and villages in the Taiz area, leaving entire communities deserted.

The IOM chief, Amy Pope, expressed concern over the growing challenge of providing lifesaving assistance to affected populations. She emphasized the urgent need for safe, unhindered access for humanitarian workers, stressing that all parties involved must protect civilians and humanitarian efforts, ensuring the availability of essential supplies, vehicles, and facilities required to deliver aid.
