At least 46,000 flee fighting in Yemen, says UN

Displaced Yemenis are fleeing their homes in droves as fighting escalates in the country, according to the United Nations (UN). The number of people forced to leave their homes has more than doubled in just a few days, with at least 46,000 individuals affected, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported Friday. The Iran-backed Houthis, who have controlled large portions of northern Yemen for years, launched a significant offensive against Saudi-backed government forces last week, claiming victory after victory.

The conflict has resulted in hundreds of deaths. On Tuesday, the UN agency had estimated the number of displaced people at around 18,500, but the figure has since surged. The Houthis recently seized control of the strategic Red Sea port city of Mocha and a key island in the Bab al-Mandab strait. Saudi Arabia has retaliated with dozens of airstrikes, hitting Mocha airport among other targets.

The IOM reported that displacement is occurring across the west coast and Taiz areas, with some entire villages abandoning their homes en route to the west of Taiz. The Mocha-Taiz road, a crucial supply route, has reportedly been cut off. IOM chief Amy Pope expressed concern that as the fighting spreads, reaching those in need of life-saving assistance is becoming increasingly difficult, emphasizing the urgent need for safe, unimpeded access to affected areas.

All parties involved must protect civilians, humanitarian workers, and safeguard the supplies, vehicles, and facilities essential for delivering aid.
