As autumn arrives, so do many pesky germs that can easily infiltrate the body's mucous membranes due to dry air. This is especially critical in environments where colleagues share the same surfaces and equipment. However, employees and employers can take steps to reduce the spread of germs, according to the Federal Agency for Labour in its "Factor A" publication.

Firstly, maintaining a clean desk is essential. Germs thrive on desks, with up to 400 times more than on a toilet seat, the agency informs. Regular cleaning is necessary, and it should go beyond a simple wipe; surfaces should be disinfected as well. If possible, eating at the desk should be avoided, as crumbs, food splatters, and small remnants accumulate on the desk, keyboard, and mouse.

Secondly, keyboards and mice require frequent cleaning due to constant contact with skin from typing and use. This is particularly important when sharing desks. To clean a keyboard, unplug it or remove the batteries, turn it over, and shake off loose debris. Use a gentle blast of air or a brush to clean crevices and wipe down the surface with a slightly damp microfiber cloth.

Allow it to dry completely. Remember to choose a disinfectant suitable for touchscreens and workstations, as common disinfectants may not be effective.

Thirdly, do not forget about smartphones. They are frequently touched and held near the mouth and ear but are rarely cleaned. The agency recommends using hygiene wipes designed for touchscreens or a dry microfiber cloth for cleaning. Don't forget to clean the case as well.

Lastly, tools and machinery used by multiple people should be cleaned regularly, as they can also act as viral carriers. It's best to clean them after each use to interrupt any potential transmission chain.
