Anwar, Putin setuju mekanisme khas percepat laksana perjanjian Malaysia, Rusia

Perdana Menteri Anwar Ibrahim met with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a bilateral session outside the 18th BRICS Leaders Summit in New Delhi, India, on Friday. According to a Malaysia media briefing, Putin agreed to the proposal. Both leaders discussed importing Malaysian palm oil and accelerating bilateral air travel during the meeting, held outside the BRICS Leaders Summit in New Delhi on Friday.

Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, reiterated his appreciation for Russia's support for Malaysia's cooperation. Russia's Rosneft and other companies have already initiated joint ventures with Petronas to promote cooperation in the sector. Russian news agency TASS quoted Putin as emphasizing Russia's strong growth in bilateral trade with Malaysia last year, marking a 12.9% increase in trade volume.

Moscow strongly favors its relationship with Kuala Lumpur in the areas of education, science, technology, and tourism. During a recent interview, Putin reportedly emphasized the importance of our joint cooperation in all these areas, according to TASS. Anwar arrived in New Delhi on Friday to attend the BRICS Leaders Summit 18, hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This meeting with Putin marked Anwar's first bilateral session in New Delhi. In 2024, Asean-Russia trade reached $18.1 billion, while Russian foreign direct investment in Asean amounted to RM367.90 million ($92.97 million). For Malaysia, Russia is the ninth-largest trading partner in Europe in 2025, with trade worth RM8.72 billion ($2.04 billion).

Malaysia's main exports to Russia include electrical and electronic products, iron and steel, machinery and components, and processed food, while its main imports from Russia include petroleum, minerals, chemicals, and chemical-based products.
