Anwar, Putin setuju mekanisme khas percepat laksana perjanjian Malaysia, Rusia

Perdana Menteri Anwar Ibrahim held a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin outside the 18th BRICS Leaders Summit in New Delhi, India on Friday. During their 20-minute discussion, Putin agreed to a special mechanism to expedite the implementation of all agreements between Malaysia and Russia. The two leaders also discussed the possibility of Malaysia importing Malaysian palm oil from Russia and accelerating air travel between the two countries.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, reiterated his appreciation for Russia's support in strengthening economic cooperation with Malaysia. Rosneft and other companies have started joint ventures with Petronas to boost cooperation in the sector. Russian media TASS quoted Putin as emphasizing the growth of 12.9% in the value of trade between Russia and Malaysia last year, highlighting Moscow's strong interest in strengthening ties with Kuala Lumpur in the fields of education, science, technology, and tourism.

During his visit to the BRICS Leaders Summit, Anwar arrived in New Delhi on Friday to attend the BRICS Summit hosted by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This meeting with Putin marked Anwar's first bilateral meeting. In 2024, Asean-Russia trade reached USD18.1 billion, while foreign direct investment from Russia in ASEAN amounted to RM367.90 million (USD92.97 million).

For Malaysia, Russia is the ninth largest trading partner in Europe in 2025, with trade worth RM8.72 billion (USD2.04 billion). Malaysia's main exports to Russia include electrical and electronic products, copper, machinery, and processed food, while its main imports include petroleum, minerals, chemicals, and chemical-based products.
