Action ordered against PIA, ASF staff for misbehaving with lawmakers

The Senate Rules of Procedure and Privileges Committee convened on Friday to address three privilege motions concerning alleged misconduct by Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) staff and Airport Security Force (ASF) personnel. Headed by Senator Syed Waqar Mehdi, the panel deliberated on incidents involving a PIA cabin crew member and an ASF official.

Senator Bilal Ahmed Khan Mandokhail brought forward a motion alleging improper behavior by a PIA cabin crew member on flight PK-326 from Quetta to Islamabad on February 7, 2026. The committee had previously recommended that the affected official apologize to Senator Mandokhail, but he insisted on stricter disciplinary measures, including potential dismissal.

Committee Chair Mehdi cited recent reports of cigarette smuggling at Multan Airport, deeming such conduct detrimental to PIA's reputation. He directed the airline to initiate departmental disciplinary action in accordance with the law.

Senator Samina Mumtaz Zehri raised a motion regarding an ASF official's behavior during check-in for Emirates flight EK-601 on July 24, 2026. The official allegedly searched Zehri's hand-carry bag and questioned her about the cash she was carrying. Zehri claimed that despite offering to count the foreign currency in a private setting, the ASF officer opened her bag at a desk where other bags were already being inspected.

She demanded better treatment for parliamentarians, expressing concern that ordinary citizens might also face similar treatment. A senior ASF officer apologized for the incident and assured the committee that the matter would be handled with Pakistan Customs.

Committee members emphasized the need for proper training for lower-ranking ASF staff to improve public conduct. The panel directed that the inquiry into the ASF official's actions be concluded within 15 days, with the responsible officer to appear before the next meeting.
