Achi: African Parliaments Must Deepen Legislative Cooperation

Côte d'Ivoire's National Assembly President, Hon. Patrick Achi, has called for enhanced legislative cooperation among African parliaments, emphasizing the importance of sustained parliamentary diplomacy to support the continent's governance and development goals. During his visit to Nigeria's capital, Abuja, Achi participated in the Gender and Social Inclusion Summit 2026 (GS-26) and met with the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL) Secretariat.

Achi highlighted the vital role of CoSPAL in African legislative cooperation and reaffirmed Côte d'Ivoire's full commitment to the organization. CoSPAL Secretary-General, Ambassador Dapo Oyewole, briefed Achi on CoSPAL's strategic priorities, including parliamentary diplomacy and legislative cooperation efforts. The discussions also focused on deepening cooperation among African legislatures, improving collaboration, and increasing women's participation in legislative processes.

CoSPAL is currently preparing for its 4th General Assembly in Monrovia, Liberia, in December 2026, where Speakers and Presidents of African parliaments will discuss legislative cooperation and parliamentary diplomacy. The engagement between Achi and Oyewole is part of CoSPAL's outreach efforts to strengthen relationships and enhance legislative cooperation among African nations.
