53-year-old woman jailed for dumping refuse in Lagos drain

Nelly Monday, a 53-year-old woman from Lagos State, has been jailed for one month for dumping refuse in a drainage channel during rainfall. According to the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Monday was arrested on September 9, 2026, in Meiran for allegedly disposing of waste in the drain during the rain. She was later brought before the Magistrate Court at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the offense.

LAWMA issued a statement warning residents against the improper disposal of waste, particularly the act of dumping refuse in drainage channels and unauthorized locations. They emphasized that such actions are considered environmental offenses and attract legal sanctions under the law. LAWMA reiterated their commitment to collaborating with enforcement agencies to identify and sanction environmental offenders across Lagos.

They urged residents to dispose of their waste responsibly through approved channels. This incident underscores the Lagos State Government and environmental authorities' ongoing efforts to combat indiscriminate waste disposal, which often leads to blocked drainage channels and flooding.
