Zahid: Umno to seek strategic partners ahead of GE16 [WATCH]

The 16th Malaysian General Election (GE16) is approaching, and the United Malays National Organisation (Umno) is gearing up for a renewed push. During an exclusive interview with Media Prima, Umno President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi addressed key aspects Umno aims to highlight at the party's general assembly ahead of GE16.

Zahid emphasized that Umno's focus will be on strategic political cooperation, centrist politics, and rebuilding its appeal among middle-ground voters. The party aims to form alliances and partnerships to contest elections as a unified front, rather than opposing each other in a three- or four-cornered fight. This approach will be crucial in ensuring Umno's success in the upcoming election.

Secondly, Umno will formulate agendas concerning the Malays, Muslims, and the wider population for the next decade. The emphasis will be on balancing the interests of these demographics while ensuring the party's continued relevance in the ever-changing political landscape.

Lastly, Zahid underscored that Umno, being an 80-year-old party, must address concerns about its relevance. He drew parallels with other long-lasting political parties, asserting that Umno can learn from their successes and strategies to remain a dominant force in Malaysian politics.

Regarding the recent successes of Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) in state elections, Zahid stressed the importance of maintaining a moderate stance and avoiding internal problems. The party aims to correct negative perceptions and promote its image as a consistent, moderate party that respects Malaysia's multiracial character.

Umno's approach of emphasizing Malay unity has sometimes been mischaracterized as identity politics, which could potentially alienate non-Malays. However, Zahid stressed that Umno's core values remain consistent with its traditional centrist approach, aiming to gain votes from the middle-ground voters who prioritize rational decision-making.

The party also addressed concerns about its historical narrative, explaining that perceptions have evolved over the past eight years. Umno's focus has always been on taking the middle path and safeguarding the interests of all parties, rather than adopting an excessive or antagonistic stance.
