Zahid: Umno to seek strategic partners ahead of GE16

Umno is gearing up for the 16th General Election (GE16) with a focus on strategic political cooperation, centrist politics, and rebuilding its appeal among middle-ground voters. President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamisi emphasized that the party's emphasis on Malay unity should not be mistaken for narrow identity politics, as Malaysia is a multiracial country.

At the Umno general assembly, Zahid outlined three main messages for delegates ahead of GE16. Firstly, the party will seek strategic political partnerships and friends to face the election, rather than contesting entirely on their own. Secondly, Umno must formulate agendas concerning the Malays, Muslims, and the wider population for at least the next decade. Lastly, as Umno approaches its 80th year, delegates must consider whether the party remains relevant.

The mood at the assembly is expected to be lively, following Umno's and Barisan Nasional's recent successes in state elections. Issues such as internal party problems, clarification of congresses and conventions held by other political parties, and responding to negative perceptions will likely take center stage. The party does not want to engage in defensive attacks on its political partners but aims to correct misconceptions through persuasion.

Umno's approach to identity politics has been questioned, with some viewing it negatively. However, Zahid clarified that the party's sincerity and middle-ground approach have proven effective in recent state elections, particularly in Johor and Negri Sembilan. The party remains committed to unity among Malays while acknowledging and respecting Malaysia's multiracial character.
