Why Barcelona preferred Anthony Gordon over Rashford – Deco

Barcelona sporting director Deco revealed the reasoning behind the club's decision to sign Anthony Gordon rather than making Marcus Rashford's loan move permanent. Rashford spent the previous season on loan at Barcelona, contributing 14 goals in all competitions and assisting the team to win La Liga and the Copa del Rey. Although Barcelona had the option to sign the England forward permanently for £30.3 million, they opted for a different approach.

Instead, Deco announced that Gordon became one of their major summer signings, coming from Newcastle United in a deal exceeding €80 million. As per BBC, Deco stated that the choice was largely influenced by Gordon's suitability to Hansi Flick's style of football. "We are extremely grateful to Rashford," Deco said, "but our idea of play is much more linked to Anthony's.

His style fits with what the coach is looking for." Deco explained that Barcelona aimed to enhance their attack with more energy and intensity, especially when Raphinha was absent. In addition, they extensively analyzed various wingers before settling on Gordon, with Flick providing crucial input in identifying the desired qualities.

"We needed more intensity," Deco said, "We analysed a lot of wingers, but \[Flick\] was clear with what he wanted and we worked on a deal from there." Gordon has already made a strong impact at Barcelona, contributing four assists in his first five appearances. The Catalan giants have commenced their new La Liga campaign with a successful start, winning all four matches while scoring 17 goals and conceding only two.

For Deco, Gordon's arrival was not about replacing Rashford, but finding a player whose attributes matched Flick's vision for Barcelona.
