Why Barcelona preferred Anthony Gordon over Rashford – Deco

Barcelona's sporting director, Deco, has outlined the rationale behind the club's decision to sign Anthony Gordon over extending Marcus Rashford's loan deal. While Rashford had a successful season at Barcelona, contributing 14 goals in all competitions and aiding the team to La Liga and Copa del Rey triumphs, Deco opted to bring Gordon from Newcastle United for a fee exceeding €80 million.

Deco emphasized that their playing style aligns more closely with the tactics of coach Hansi Flick, making Gordon a better fit. The Catalan giants sought to inject more energy and intensity into their attack, particularly when star forward Raphinha was absent. Deco highlighted that they meticulously evaluated several wingers before settling on Gordon, with Flick playing a crucial role in pinpointing the desired attributes.

Gordon's early impact at the club has been noteworthy, contributing four assists in just five appearances. For Deco, the move wasn't a replacement for Rashford but rather an effort to find a player embodying Flick's vision for Barcelona's style of play.
