Vuelta debutant Brennan claims fifth victory on stage 17

Seville, Spain witnessed sprint sensation Matthew Brennan clinching his fifth victory in the Vuelta a Espana on Wednesday. The 21-year-old, making his Grand Tour debut, emerged victorious in the 17th stage, outpacing Jordi Meeus and Magnus Cort Nielsen in a bunch sprint finish in Seville. Leading general classification holder Enric Mas edged closer to a first Grand Tour win, extending his lead over Felix Gall by 2 minutes and 6 seconds.

Four-time Vuelta champion Primoz Roglic trailed by a further four seconds. The stage featured no climbs, with a long, flat 185-kilometer route from Dos Hermanas to Seville. Early on, Sinuhe Fernandez and Enzo Paleni formed a formidable breakaway, extending their lead to over five minutes. Visma worked relentlessly to close the gap, but Groupama FDJ-United's Paleni was eventually dropped with just three kilometers to go.

Young star Brennan completed the sprint victory, raising all five fingers of his hand in celebration to represent his five stage wins. This marks Brennan among a select group of riders, including Tadej Pogacar who was initially favored to win this year's Vuelta before suffering a season-ending injury, to achieve five or more stage victories in a single Grand Tour.

On Thursday, the riders will tackle a 32.1-kilometer individual time trial from El Puerto de Santa Maria to Jerez de la Frontera, providing a final opportunity for Mas's general classification contenders to narrow the gap on the Spaniard.
