US Supreme Court blocks Republican-drawn congressional map in Missouri

On Thursday, the US Supreme Court halted Missouri from utilizing a redrawn congressional map that favors Republicans for the upcoming midterm elections, presenting a challenge to President Donald Trump and the party's prospects of retaining their slim majority in the House of Representatives.

The justices granted an emergency request by the map's opponents to suspend a federal judge's decision that permitted the use of the reconfigured boundaries exclusively in the Nov 3 elections. The court's brief unsigned order provided no justification, as is customary when the justices address emergency matters. No justice publicly disagreed with the decision.

The challengers, encompassing a coalition against the Republican-drawn map known as People Not Politicians, urgently sought the Supreme Court's involvement following a ruling by Chief US District Judge Stephen Clark in St. Louis, Missouri, on Tuesday. Clark's decision transpired shortly after the Supreme Court declined to intervene in a separate attempt by Missouri officials to reinstate the redrawn map, which the state's highest court had prohibited until it was subjected to a referendum.

The judge's directive seemed to contravene the Missouri Supreme Court's unanimous ruling on September 3 that blocked the map, leaving Missouri's congressional districts in a state of uncertainty and adding further complexity to the high-stakes electoral contest. The Republican-led effort, endorsed by President Donald Trump, aimed to redraw congressional districts in a manner that could favor Republican candidates.

Missouri Republicans enacted the new map, which eliminated the Kansas City-based seat held by long-serving Democratic Representative Emanuel Cleaver, during the 2025 redistricting process. Republicans currently maintain a narrow 219-214 majority in the US House, including an independent member who aligns with Republican ranks.
