Mahama swears in three new Supreme Court justices, charges them to uphold rule of law

President John Dramani Mahama has officially appointed three new Justices to the Supreme Court, instructing them to uphold the Constitution, safeguard citizens' rights, and ensure no individual or institution operates above the law. At a ceremony held at the Jubilee House on September 10, Mahama highlighted the Supreme Court's pivotal role in Ghana's constitutional democracy and emphasized its standing as the nation's ultimate judicial authority.

The President described the Court's significance in governing the Republic, its ability to resolve critical national matters, and its role in providing authoritative interpretations of the Constitution and shaping the legal landscape of the country. Mahama stressed that the legitimacy of the Supreme Court should be based on public confidence, not political influence or power.

He reiterated that the Court's authority stems from the trust of the people and called for the new justices to maintain the highest standards of judicial independence and integrity.

Mahama noted that possessing extensive legal knowledge was not enough for those appointed to the Supreme Court; they must also exhibit sound judgment, personal integrity, intellectual courage, patience, and a profound commitment to justice. He urged the newly sworn-in justices to uphold these values as they embark on their responsibilities on the nation's highest court.
