US Ski & Snowboard withdraws from a proposed strategic alliance with US Biathlon

On Wednesday, the U.S. Ski & Snowboard (USSS) announced it is withdrawing from a proposed strategic alliance with the U.S. Biathlon Association (USBA). This would have been the first such merger between two Olympic sport organizations. USSS CEO Sophie Goldschmidt expressed disappointment, stating that the community was not receptive to the proposed operating agreement.

The annual subscription for the alliance was set at $205 plus GST for one year, with automatic renewal at $233 plus GST every 52 weeks unless cancelled. USSS had been in discussions with USBA for months, aiming to boost revenues and results for biathlon, which is struggling to achieve its first Olympic medal. However, opposition from biathlon coaches, volunteers, and official members led to the alliance being set for a vote.

Biathlon officials cited financial cuts from the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee and reduced sponsor support as reasons for considering the alliance with USSS. USSS aimed to provide more resources for biathlon, while preserving its identity and independence.
