Umno must evolve to restore party’s image

Umno must undergo major changes to regain its political relevance in the post-15th general election era. To rebuild its image, the party must focus on three key areas: changing its political message, cleansing its system, and developing its human resources. Instead of relying on PAS to revive Umno, the party must address its own corruption and patronage issues.

Simply using ethnocentric rhetoric won't work anymore; Umno needs a dedication to honest governance and the ability to adapt to Malaysia's diverse political landscape. The party cannot continue with patronage, power monopolies, money politics, or selecting candidates based on seniority. Umno is no longer the sole voice for the Malay-Bumiputera community; new political groups with different nationalist and religious ideas have entered the scene, making competition for votes fiercer.

Voters today are more likely to judge a party based on its ability to be accountable and efficient in governance. So, Umno must shift its focus from ethnic divisions to policy-based competition. To tackle corruption and money politics perceptions, Umno needs a bold and transparent plan for reform. The party's leaders must take strict disciplinary actions against anyone involved in illegal activities.

Punishing those who break the rules but still supporting them because of loyalty will damage Umno's credibility. In the future, Umno should present itself as a leader in protecting Malaysia's Anti-Corruption Commission and the judiciary from any political influence. It should also tighten the rules for choosing candidates and positions, giving more importance to honesty and skills instead of how long someone has been in the party.

The party should also require important officials (MPs and assemblymen) to regularly declare their assets to an independent group that checks them. Finally, Umno must push for a transparent system of funding for political activities to end the cycle of patronage politics that has plagued its culture. In short, repairing Umno's image is not just a choice, but a matter of survival.

The party's story must change from just trying to survive politically to creating fair policies and being open about its actions. This change needs strong leadership willing to transform the party's culture from one based on favors to one focused on policies. Through real reforms and being open to working in a diverse society, Umno can change its identity into a modern, honest, and relevant party ready to handle Malaysia's future social and political challenges.
