Uganda pulling out of Prince Harry’s Invictus Games, says military chief

Uganda has announced its withdrawal from Prince Harry’s Invictus Games, a sports event for wounded military veterans, only two months after it had agreed to participate. This decision, made by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the country's Chief of Defence and President’s son, was disclosed in a social media post on X. General Kainerugaba cited a desire to avoid being seen as opposing King Charles III as the reason behind the withdrawal.

Uganda's government spokesman, Alan Kasujja, confirmed the decision, stating that it was General Kainerugaba's choice regarding the country's participation in the Invictus Games. The King's office had previously issued a letter to Prince Harry and Meghan, clarifying that they were not working royals.

Royal sources, however, have stated that King Charles III supports initiatives that aid wounded service personnel. The Invictus Games organization has not received any official notification about the potential withdrawal and is seeking clarification from their Ugandan contacts.

General Kainerugaba made several other X posts on Thursday, including a series of provocative messages about other military generals, suggesting tensions within the military ranks. Uganda had previously confirmed its participation in the next games set to be held in Birmingham, UK, next year.
