Trump pledges $5,000 voter payout if Republicans win the midterms

The United States faces its greatest threat in history, according to US President Donald Trump – communism. Trump repeatedly emphasizes this message at various events, from school visits to his major Independence Day speech and the NATO summit in Turkey. This "enemy image" of communism is being pushed by Republican representatives, barely two months before the midterm elections.

The message warns that if voters don't choose them, the radical left could take over the government. Trump goes further, describing communism as the biggest threat to the nation since the First and Second World Wars, Pearl Harbor, and September 11. Republican strategists believe this demonization of the left could influence the midterm elections in November.

The tradition of anti-communism in the U.S. dates back to the Cold War, where communists were seen as enemies. However, Matthew Dallek, a historian from George Washington University, argues that this notion has faded since the Soviet Union's collapse 35 years ago. Dallek believes the resurgence of left-leaning Democrats in primary elections could reignite this fear.

However, he disagrees with the characterization of these Democrats as communists. Despite this, Dallek believes that labeling left-leaning Democrats as communists fuels the perception of radical left-wing individuals. Recent YouGov polls indicate that only a minority of Americans view communism as a major threat, with about a quarter perceiving it as moderate or low.

Older and conservative respondents seem to hold more extreme views. Historians suggest Trump's warnings could mobilize his core supporters and may even encourage some to vote in the November elections. Two-thirds of Congress and a third of the Senate are up for election, and a change in either chamber could block Democratic legislation and subject Trump's administration to oversight committees.
