In the world of investing, starting off with a solid strategy is crucial, especially for those new to the game. My own financial journey began with a focus on minimizing expenses, which was reflected in the way I handled my savings. Unlike my brother who embraced a more diversified approach, I kept my funds separate, only dipping my toes into the waters of fixed-interest accounts.

It may not come as a shock that, as a left-leaning humanities student, I found greater engagement with political events in the US than with my own financial affairs. This mindset changed when I had to reevaluate my private pension plan last year. After all, that was the goal I set myself in 2008, graduating with a degree in hand.

Back then, I had invested in a pension insurance fund based on share funds, recommended by a friend – not a wise decision to make retrospectively. The annual summary arrived in the mail without much scrutiny, until my move to The Handelsblatt prompted a closer look. It was only after turning 42 that I realized I had only gained 1,000 euros in profits over a 15-year period, despite the markets performing reasonably well during that time.
