The iPhone Air 2 Wasn’t Announced. Here’s Why That’s Bad for Apple Buyers

Apple's recent iPhone launch event saw the introduction of premium devices, but notably, they did not announce a second generation of the lightweight iPhone Air. This absence of a more affordable, slim device may prove detrimental for Apple buyers, as the Air once offered a middle ground option between the base iPhone and the more expensive Pro models.

The original iPhone Air, priced at $999, provided a more accessible option to those who desired a lighter, smaller phone without sacrificing performance. However, the Air's limited features, such as a single 48-megapixel camera and smaller battery, may have contributed to its disappointing sales. Despite this, the Air's slim design and balanced features could have played a crucial role in shaping Apple's future folding phone, as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 only has two rear cameras compared to the three on other models.

Consumers have expressed their preference for a more cost-effective phone with improved specifications, with a recent CNET survey revealing that 75% of respondents were uninterested in a foldable iPhone and preferred to spend less than $1,000. Apple's decision to raise iPhone 17 prices and introduce the higher-end iPhone Duo, priced between $1,999 and $3,199, has further narrowed the middle ground for budget-conscious consumers.

With the iPhone 17 Air starting at $1,099, Apple's pricing strategy is leaving fewer budget options for consumers during a challenging economic climate. Some experts believe Apple is intentionally withholding the second iPhone Air until the rumored spring launch, coinciding with the release of the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18E, a budget model for the iPhone 17E.

This strategy could help spread shipments throughout the year and focus attention on the premium models, including the new foldable iPhone. Nonetheless, the absence of lower-end options currently forces consumers upgrading to a new Apple device to choose between the $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro and potentially as much as $3,199 for the 2TB iPhone Duo.
