South Dakota Gridiron Report: Two teams from each class that have impressed early

Just a quarter of the South Dakota high school football season has concluded, and already, certain teams have caught attention with their impressive early performances. For the Class 11B division, Wagner has started their season 3-0 after suffering substantial losses from senior departures. Despite these changes, their defense has been formidable, allowing only three total points in three games. Junior quarterback Michael Koupal has stepped up to replace the departed quarterback, Gannon Knebel.

In the nine-man division, Beresford has also made a strong start with two wins, including a convincing 28-7 victory over Groton Area. With only two games played, the Watchdogs have matched their winning streak from previous seasons.

Garretson, originally ranked low, has made a surprising turn with a 3-0 start, including victories over top-tier teams like Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan and Hanson. Garretson's offensive consistency, scoring at least 35 points in each win, is noteworthy, and they host No. 2-ranked Bon Homme next.

Great Plains Lutheran demonstrates defensive prowess in Class 9AA, with two shutouts and only 14 points allowed in three games. Their favorable schedule further highlights their potential for a successful season.

Castlewood, after crushing Hamlin and Howard, has ascended to the No. 2 ranking in the Class 9A division. Kamden Keszler has been a standout player for the Warriors.

Centerville, despite not being on the preseason South Dakota Prep Media poll, has already secured a 3-0 record and climbed to the No. 3 ranking in Class 9A. Their road to the top includes a significant game against Freeman.

St. Mary, reigning Class 9B champions, opened their season with two 50-point victories. The Cardinals have now won 15 games in a row, and their dominant performance is reminiscent of the previous perfect season. The Pirates from Avon have also made an impact, causing St. Mary to be seen as a strong contender.
