SDP targets presidency, 28 states in 2027

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has announced its ambition to contest the presidency, governorships in 28 states and other elected positions in the 2027 general elections. Prof. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe, the party's National Chairman, made this declaration at the party's Special National Convention in Abuja. In addition to seeking seats in the National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly, Gombe emphasized that the party's structures at all levels remained strong despite the challenges it faced.

The party has taken measures to safeguard its constitutional rights and ensure Nigerians can exercise their voting rights on the SDP platform.

Gombe stressed that no individual should hold more importance than the political party and that personal interests must not undermine the collective will. He urged the resolution of internal differences through dialogue and established constitutional processes. Ahead of the 2027 elections, Gombe stated that the SDP would shift from consolidation to mobilization, aiming to strengthen its structures and engage more youths and women.

Dr Olu Agunloye, the party's National Secretary, highlighted the SDP's unique combination of political structure and ideology. He proudly declared the party's social democratic beliefs and commitment to ideology, affirming that the party was driven by ideology. Agunloye acknowledged that the party had undergone a cleansing process and was now stronger, emphasizing the need for a clear blueprint for governance ahead of the elections.

He urged party members to take the party's message to Nigerians and work towards securing their election.

Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, a former Inspector General of Police and SDP governorship candidate in Nasarawa State, called for the party to focus its campaign on the grassroots and identify the problems affecting communities. He stated that the masses were looking for leaders who could rescue them and urged members to return to their communities, restrategize, and mobilize supporters for the 2027 elections.

SDP presidential candidate Prince Adewole Adebayo emphasized the party's goal to unite the country and address poverty and insecurity. He affirmed that the SDP was not established to promote individual interests but to provide an alternative for Nigerians. Adebayo outlined three key objectives of the party: proving that God did not make a mistake in creating Nigeria, campaigning to convince Nigerians that the country's problems could be addressed, and eradicating poverty.

He pledged that the SDP would unite Nigeria and make Nigerians understand that they did not have to accept poverty and insecurity as permanent conditions. The party plans to take its campaign to the grassroots ahead of the 2027 elections.
