Sarawak Flying Doctor Service operations suspended after fatal helicopter crash, says health minister

KUALA LUMPUR, September 10 — The Health Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, has announced a temporary suspension of all Flying Doctor Service (FDS) operations in the state of Sarawak following a tragic helicopter crash in Long Lellang, Miri. In a statement released today, Dr Dzulkefly explained that the suspension would allow for a thorough investigation into the incident and an evaluation of the current safety and operational practices within the FDS.

He assured the public that emergency medical evacuation services for urgent cases would continue, through collaboration between the Health Ministry and the Fire and Rescue Department. The minister also hinted at the possibility of utilizing Armed Forces assets to transport patients in need of emergency treatment to appropriate healthcare facilities.

An extensive review of the FDS in Sarawak is set to be conducted by the ministry, encompassing aspects such as contracts, governance, operational safety, coverage requirements, and the overall effectiveness of the existing service model. Dr Dzulkefly emphasized that the wellbeing of both personnel and patients remains the top priority for the ministry, alongside ensuring uninterrupted healthcare services for the rural communities.

Furthermore, the ministry is currently reviewing the locations and access methods of the FDS, including the exploration of safe and practical transport alternatives, and promises to provide additional updates to the public in due course.
