Sarawak Flying Doctor Service operations suspended after fatal helicopter crash, says health minister

KUALA LUMPUR, September 10 — All Flying Doctor Service (FDS) operations in Sarawak have been temporarily halted after a tragic helicopter crash in Long Lellang, Miri, according to Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. A statement from the ministry revealed that the suspension will enable a thorough investigation into the incident and a review of existing safety and operational protocols.

Emergency medical evacuation services for critical cases will persist through a collaboration between the Health Ministry and the Fire and Rescue Department. The ministry is also exploring the potential use of Armed Forces assets to transport patients in need of urgent medical attention to appropriate healthcare facilities. A comprehensive evaluation of the FDS in Sarawak, encompassing its contracts, governance, operational safety, coverage requirements, and the efficacy of the present service model, will be conducted by the ministry.

However, Dr Dzulkefly emphasized that the well-being of personnel and patients remains the top priority of the ministry, alongside ensuring the uninterrupted provision of healthcare services to remote communities. Furthermore, the ministry is evaluating FDS locations and access methods, including secure and viable transportation alternatives, and will issue additional updates to the public.
