Samsung waited years for Apple's foldable — then came the trolling

Samsung has been eagerly anticipating Apple's arrival in the foldable smartphone market. Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo, was unveiled on Wednesday, entering a category that Samsung has been competing in since 2019. Samsung's response to Apple's entry has been a mix of humor and boastfulness. Samsung Mobile US posted sarcastic messages on social media, mocking Apple for "reheating" Samsung's ideas.

One post even directly challenged Apple to finish its work. Despite the playful banter, Samsung's new Galaxy Z Fold8 is thinner and cheaper than Apple's Duo. It measures 4.5mm when open and 9.7mm folded, while the Duo is 5.2mm and 11.3mm respectively. Samsung also offers up to 2TB of storage compared to Apple's 1TB. However, Apple's first foldable has a larger display and supports Apple Pencil, which Samsung's device does not.

The timing of Apple's entry is significant. Analysts predict that Apple could capture around a quarter of the foldable market, compared to Samsung's current 38 percent share. This could put Apple within striking distance of Samsung, despite Samsung's eight generations of foldable smartphones and years of experience in the field.
