Samsung is working with OpenAI on next-generation chips while deploying ChatGPT at massive scale

Samsung and OpenAI are joining forces on advanced chip development while simultaneously rolling out ChatGPT on a massive scale across the South Korean company. According to Harrison Kim, general manager of OpenAI Korea, the collaboration is a significant aspect of their growing partnership. The focus of their joint efforts lies in the development of next-generation chips, though specific details about the chips or Samsung's involvement remain undisclosed.

This move comes after OpenAI unveiled Jalapeno, its first custom AI chip, in collaboration with Broadcom and TSMC. The significance of memory in AI systems is also highlighted by OpenAI, as the company notes the increasing demand for advanced memory to support faster and more complex computations in data centers. Samsung and SK Hynix have signed letters of intent to supply memory chips for OpenAI's Stargate data center project, with Samsung being one of OpenAI's largest enterprise users.

ChatGPT has been deployed widely within Samsung, with employees in Korea and other markets using it for various purposes such as research, development, marketing, and sales. The company has been progressively opening access to several generative AI products internally, with Samsung employees in its Device Experience division being granted access to ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude for work.

OpenAI reported a significant surge in ChatGPT Enterprise users in South Korea, with the number of users approximately 28 times higher than a year prior, indicating a growing adoption of AI across various departments within businesses. As OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra model is launched, the company anticipates a further increase in product usage, leveraging the model's enhanced performance in a range of professional and technical tasks.
