SALGA says candidates must take municipal responsibilities seriously

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) has urged political parties to ensure that candidates running in the upcoming municipal elections are ready to fulfill their responsibilities at the municipal level. SALGA emphasizes that communities cannot tolerate councillors who are ineffective once they are elected. Currently, SALGA is hosting its Provincial Members Assembly in Hartbeespoort, North West, as the present group of councillors is set to step down in November.

Khumalo Molefe, SALGA's provincial chairperson, states that political parties should choose candidates who comprehend the gravity of their role in serving the community. North West province, with four district municipalities and 18 local municipalities, has SALGA members as mayors. Molefe further explains that the association is preparing for a transition between the current and incoming groups of councillors and has urged political parties to prioritize the selection of the best candidates for local government positions.
