Republicans put Trump at centre of US midterm election gamble

US Republicans convened a significant midterm convention in Dallas on Wednesday, aiming to use Donald Trump as the focal point of their campaign to potentially secure a victory despite unfavorable election predictions. The two-day event, dubbed "Trumpapalooza," endeavours to convince Trump's supporters that he remains an effective candidate for the November 3 election, when Republicans risk losing the House of Representatives and face a tough fight to retain the Senate.

During the gathering, Trump addressed the crowd, highlighting the unprecedented actions taken during his presidency. However, Trump's approval rating remains low at 33 per cent, making it challenging to mobilize voters while addressing issues such as inflation, high gasoline prices, and ongoing tensions with Iran. Recent projections by Decision Desk HQ suggest that Democrats are expected to win the House with a 230-205 margin, and the Senate with a 51-49 advantage in November.

Despite the challenges, Susan Kokinda, a conservative podcaster from Michigan, remains optimistic about Republican prospects, attributing their resilience to Trump's unique leadership style. Meanwhile, at the American Airlines Center, an atmosphere of festivity prevailed, with Trump posters and merchandise lining the venue. Despite some gaps in the stands, supporters were steadily arriving as the speeches commenced, signaling a lively turnout.
