Qatar Airways backs operational readiness with $4bn global maintenance hub: Technology Chief

Doha, Qatar - Qatar Airways, the national carrier of the State of Qatar, has demonstrated its operational readiness with a $4 billion global maintenance hub, according to Chief Technology Officer Eng. Ali Al Saadi. Speaking at a media open day on September 9, 2026, Al Saadi emphasized the airline's commitment to passenger safety and on-time performance, which is prioritized over all else.

The Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) center, which is the core of this hub, occupies a vast area equivalent to 13 football fields and boasts assets and inventory valued at approximately $4 billion, excluding the aircraft housed there. This includes a $1.5 billion to $2 billion warehouse for spare parts and equipment, along with an engine facility housing nearly 80 engines valued at nearly $2 billion, one of the largest such inventories in the world.

Al Saadi explained that the MRO center can accommodate 14 aircraft simultaneously, performing around 170 heavy maintenance events and approximately 15,000 light maintenance events annually. This is achieved through 22 specialized shops, including electrical, maintenance and safety sections, as well as airframe shops responsible for fuselage and aluminum structures.

The MRO center is at the forefront of Qatar Airways' innovation and fleet modernization initiatives, with the airline leading in deploying the latest technologies. This includes the widespread rollout of Qsuite seats and high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi across its aircraft. Al Saadi also highlighted the center's role in workforce development, aligning with Qatar National Vision 2030.
