President Mahama warns: Poor refereeing, match manipulation are destroying Ghana football

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed deep concerns over the state of Ghanaian football, specifically citing poor refereeing and match manipulation as major threats to the sport's integrity and popularity. Speaking at a gathering at the Jubilee House, Mahama emphasized that the credibility and commercial viability of Ghanaian football are at risk due to questionable officiating, which is leading to declining attendance and revenue for clubs.

The President urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the referees' body to collaborate in improving refereeing standards and ensuring matches are decided fairly based on merit. He warned that a lack of confidence in the competition could deter supporters and diminish the sport's appeal, ultimately harming the clubs' financial health.

Mahama presented GH¢684,000 from the Sports Development Fund to support Ghana's continental teams, Medeama SC, Nations FC, and Ampem Darkoa Ladies, while also calling for increased investment in women's football and the revival of Ghana's Colts football system. He challenged the clubs to focus on competitive matches, urging them to uphold the spirit of fair play and national pride by reviving the sport's reputation both domestically and internationally.
