Perak assembly selects Hairul Amir Sabri as new senator

The Perak assembly recently decided to appoint Hairul Amir Sabri as a senator to represent the assembly in the Dewan Negara. According to reports from Bernama, the decision was made by Perak speaker Zahir Abdul Khalid after Hairul, who is 38 years old, received 33 votes, surpassing Perak PAS Dewan Ulama chief Zulkifli Zakaria, who received 26 votes. The position of the Dewan Negara seat that Hairul will fill was previously occupied by Amanah vice-president Mujahid Yusof Rawa, whose term ended on May 24.

Hairul was nominated for the position by Housing and local government committee chairman and Teja assemblyman Sandrea Ng, on behalf of the state government. Zolkafly Harun, the chairman of the rural development, plantation, agriculture, and food industry committee and Lintang assemblyman, seconded the nomination. Opposition representative and Manjoi assemblyman Hafez Sabri nominated Zulkifli, who was seconded by Sungai Manik assemblyman Zainol Fadzi Paharudin.

Zahir stated that Hairul's name would be submitted to the Dewan Negara secretary's office as soon as possible. The assembly session was subsequently adjourned without a fixed date.
