Perak assembly names state PKR chairman Hairul Amir as new senator

Perak assembly has selected state PKR chairman Hairul Amir Sabri as the new senator to represent the state in the Dewan Negara. The speaker of Perak, Zahir Abdul Khalid, declared the decision, which came after Hairul secured 33 votes, outdoing Perak PAS Dewan Ulama chief Zulkifli Zakaria who garnered 26 votes. The motion was initiated by Menteri Besar Saarani Mohamad, under Article 45(1)(a) of the Federal Constitution, following the vacancy created by the previous senator, Amanah vice-president Mujahid Yusof Rawa, whose term ended on May 24.

Sandrea Ng, the chairman of the Housing and Local Government Committee and an assemblyman from Teja, proposed Hairul's nomination, which was endorsed by Zolkafly Harun, the chairman of the Rural Development, Plantation, Agriculture, and Food Industry Committee and an assemblyman from Lintang. Hafez Sabri, an opposition representative and assemblyman from Manjoi, put forth Zulkifli's name, who was seconded by Zainol Fadzi Paharudin, a representative from Sungai Manik.

Zahir mentioned that Hairul's name would be forwarded to the Dewan Negara secretary's office as quickly as possible, after which the assembly session was adjourned indefinitely.
