Not all hypertension medicines cause erectile dysfunction – Sarpong Asiedu

Kwame Sarpong Asiedu, Fellow in Public Health at the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), clarified during a discussion on Joy FM Super Morning Show that not all hypertension medicines cause erectile dysfunction. Speaking about erectile dysfunction and its link to blood circulation, he stressed that it is often due to poor circulation into the penile area.

Diabetes can also contribute to sexual function issues through nerve damage. Acknowledging that some blood pressure medicines can cause erectile dysfunction, Asiedu emphasized that this does not apply to all hypertension medications. He explained that blood pressure has two main components: cardiac output, which is how much blood the heart pumps, and peripheral resistance, which is the resistance the blood encounters as it flows through the blood vessels.

Different blood pressure medicines work in various ways, with some reducing the heart's pressure (cardiac output) and others reducing the resistance in the blood vessels (peripheral resistance). He cautioned against generalizing the effect of causing erectile dysfunction to all blood pressure drugs. Asiedu urged healthcare professionals to individualize treatment for patients, rejecting the idea that blood pressure medication automatically causes erectile dysfunction in everyone who takes it.
