‘No need to erase history’: Wanita Umno defends Najib’s legacy amid ‘legal process’

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 — The women's division of Umno has reaffirmed its allegiance to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, affirming that the party does not need to "wipe away history" to progress. At the Wanita Umno assembly today, the chief, Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad, called on the party to recognize leaders who dedicated their lives to Umno and the nation.

"We appreciate those who have contributed to the party," Noraini stated, highlighting the commitment of past leaders. "And Wanita Umno also does not forget the contributions of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. We do not need to erase history to build the future." Noraini, who also holds the position of Minister of plantation and commodities, argued that Najib's influence on Malaysia's economic growth, infrastructure development, and public welfare is an irrefutable part of the country's past, irrespective of the present political atmosphere.

Acknowledging the ongoing legal proceedings against the former prime minister, she emphasized that upholding the legal process does not preclude the expression of human empathy. "Respecting the legal process does not prevent us from having human values," Noraini asserted. Expressing her final thoughts, Noraini offered prayers for Najib and his family, wishing them strength and resilience in their current trials.

"We continue to pray that the doors of justice and compassion will be opened, so that he can return to his family and continue the struggle together," she said. Currently, Najib is serving a prison term as a result of his conviction in the 1MDB global corruption scandal.
