New Apple CEO debuts latest iPhones and its first foldable Duo

In Singapore, Apple unveiled a foldable phone named Duo on September 9, marking the most significant change in years for the company's flagship product. The Duo resembles a passport in size and shape, featuring rounded edges and an open horizontal screen that can also be viewed vertically. When folded, it presents a smaller single screen on the front. Apple claims the Duo to be their thinnest phone to date.

This introduction of the foldable phone, the first since removing the physical home button from the iPhone X in 2017, signifies a major overhaul of Apple's flagship product under new CEO John Ternus. Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook, emphasized the iPhone's potential as a personal AI hub prioritizing privacy, stating that users should have control over their data. He introduced an upgraded Siri assistant that will function with 300,000 apps at launch.

Alongside the Duo, Apple also presented the latest versions of its renowned iPhone lineup - the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. Priced at US$1,199 and US$1,299 respectively, these models represent a US$100 increase from their predecessors. In Singapore, the base 256GB Duo model starts at S$3,099, with the 2TB configuration priced at S$4,899.

Apple also unveiled a feature designed to tackle growing concerns over AI-generated and manipulated images, introducing an "Apple Reference Image" standard to verify the authenticity of images captured by the new iPhone 18 Pro cameras.

Additionally, Apple demonstrated the A20 Pro chip, promising enhancements to support advanced AI models running directly on iPhones. Apple Intelligence and Siri received significant attention, with Apple leveraging its extensive hardware base to integrate AI into everyday experiences across devices. Apple also introduced a new version of AirPods starting at US$129, featuring noise cancellation, and a US$149 version with extra features like wireless charging and on-stem volume control.

The event also showcased the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, positioned as substantial health-focused upgrades. These watches utilize new Apple silicon and improved sensors to deliver the most accurate heart-rate tracking in wearable technology. Ternus, previously Apple's hardware chief, will now focus on persuading customers that a foldable device, expected to cost over US$2,000, is necessary.

Despite the high price, analysts predict Apple will sell every foldable iPhone it produces and capture a 40% share of the niche market by the end of next year.
