Bund and state interior ministers are considering the potential protection of specific classified data following the AfD's electoral success in Saxony-Anhalt, according to security sources. The focus, according to insiders, is on safeguarding sources and information linked to Russia, if necessary. However, crucial information aiding in the prevention of terrorist attacks would continue to be fully accessible to all, the "Bild" newspaper reported.

The ministers' aim, as per security sources, is primarily to address the relationship between the AfD and Russia, and to prevent a potential leak of information. The land vote in Saxony-Anhalt saw the AfD achieve its highest-ever result with 43.8 percent, more than doubling its 2021 performance, though they fell short of an absolute majority.

The AfD is currently classified as a right-wing extremist party in Saxony-Anhalt and four other states, with the AfD candidate for the party's leadership in Saxony-Anhalt aiming to secure a majority among other parties and individual MPs. If the AfD were to form the government, the state's Interior Ministry could also be in AfD hands.

Saxony-Anhalt's Chief State Prosecutor Rainer Robra (CDU) rejects the idea of cutting off the state from security-related information in the event of an AfD-led government. "I cannot imagine how cooperation between states would function if Saxony-Anhalt were excluded from domestic or defense policy information," Robra told the German Press Agency (RND).

"In the case of defense policy, the Bundesrat must also be involved, and Saxony-Anhalt's membership would remain unrestricted." Robra warned against increasing isolation and less respectful respect for the decisions of voters, saying that Germany cannot lead the country out of crisis in that way. It would only attract more people to the AfD.
