Muted US response to UK’s West Bank sanctions may reflect simmering frustration

The United States' subdued reaction to the United Kingdom imposing sanctions on Israeli settlements in the West Bank may be a reflection of the administration's frustration with Israeli leadership. Upon the UK's announcement, Israel responded with fury, threatening to close Britain's diplomatic mission to Palestinians, expel UK military staff from an international coordination base near Gaza, and ban numerous pro-peace members of parliament from entering Israel.

The UK asserted a moral obligation to prevent the "destruction" of the two-state solution, accusing Israel of ignoring "ethnic cleansing" of Palestinians by settlers.
