Music Affairs Centre nurtures local vocal talent through collective singing

Doha, Qatar - The Music Affairs Centre at the Ministry of Culture is nurturing emerging vocal talent through its innovative "Maqam" Choir project. This initiative aims to harness the expressive power of the human voice while showcasing Arab musical heritage in a contemporary ensemble setting.

Rooted in maqam, a cornerstone of Arab musical identity, "Maqam" reimagines songs from across the Arab world through vocal harmony, rhythmic expression, and meticulously structured ensemble performance. The Music Affairs Centre first unveiled "Maqam" after a year of meticulous preparation, culminating in the selection of vocal talents for a dedicated training and development program.

Khalid Al Salem, Director of the Music Affairs Centre, emphasized the project's alignment with the Centre's dedication to identifying and cultivating vocal potential in Qatar. He stated, "The past period has revealed voices with considerable potential and skills that deserve greater opportunities for artistic development and experience."

Distinguished from traditional choral groups, "Maqam" is an artistic endeavor centered on a cappella performance, with each singer contributing melody, rhythm, and harmony through their voice. The ensemble is organized into four vocal parts, each representing a distinct range, culminating in a unified musical texture.

While vocal harmonies remain central to the choir's identity, "Maqam" also seamlessly integrates instrumental music with ensemble singing. This flexibility enables the choir to explore a wider repertoire and reinterpret musical works through diverse vocal arrangements.

The choir's repertoire draws from the rich musical heritage of the Arab world, highlighting the diversity of melodies, maqamat, rhythms, and traditions. Rather than merely regurgitating familiar songs, "Maqam" strives to preserve their essence while presenting them through a unique collective vocal language, positioning the ensemble as a distinctive voice within the regional musical landscape.
