Minister sets up committee to implement housing reforms

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqa Darma, has established a 14-member committee to implement housing sector reforms in Nigeria. The committee, chaired by the Minister's Permanent Secretary, is tasked with developing a strategy to boost the industry's contribution to the nation's economy. Darma emphasized the government's responsibility to house Nigerians and create an enabling environment for them to house themselves.

He stressed the need for stronger regulation of the built environment, pointing to the sector's potential to contribute over 70% to Nigeria's GDP. The committee, which will have six weeks to submit its report, is expected to transform the built environment industry and accommodate all stakeholders. The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Shuaib Belgore, described the assignment as a privilege for improving housing outcomes for Nigerians and unlocking the sector's potential contribution to the national GDP.
