Massive sinkhole opens outside Nicolas Cage’s Malibu mansion

A sinkhole, measuring approximately 30 feet by 30 feet, has emerged in the driveway of a Malibu home, believed to be owned by actor Nicolas Cage. This occurred following heavy rainfall in the region, according to local media reports. No injuries have been reported thus far. Cage acquired the property in 2024, as reported by the New York Times following its sale.

Cage is an accomplished actor, having been awarded an Oscar for his role in "Leaving Las Vegas" back in 1996. Known for a variety of films such as "Gone in 60 Seconds," "Face/Off," "Con Air," "Pig," "Moonstruck," and "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent," the incident has raised concerns among nearby residents. One local resident noted that an 8-foot sinkhole had been forming on Monday, which initially did not cause significant alarm.

However, the situation escalated early Tuesday morning, with a 30-foot crater forming, engulfing the home's driveway and leaving broken asphalt, concrete, and construction debris. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene at dawn to address a gas leak that had been triggered by the structural failure. SoCalGas confirmed that the leak had been contained.

Traffic cones were placed around the crater, and waves from the oceanfront were reported to be lapping at the hole, rushing out again beneath the supports of the residence. The incident unfolded after a coastal flooding warning was issued for Los Angeles due to Tropical Storm Marie, which had been a hurricane before losing its strength.

Malibu City officials have declared at least five homes on the street unsafe for entry, warning that emergency access is severely limited and that the area could become impassable due to the large portion of the road that has collapsed.
