Leeds forward Okafor steps back from Swiss national team

Leeds United footballer Noah Okafor has decided to step away from Switzerland's national team, citing a breakdown in trust with the head coach Murat Yakin. The 26-year-old, who has earned 26 caps for Switzerland since making his debut in 2019, made only 19 minutes' appearance at the World Cup, coming on as a substitute in their last-32 victory over Algeria.

In an Instagram statement, Okafor explained that his decision was not connected to limited playing time, but rather due to perceived mistreatment by the current leadership. He highlighted instances of broken trust and commitments, as well as harsh reactions to minor mistakes during the match against Algeria, as factors that led to his decision.

The Swiss Football Association acknowledged Okafor's choice and expressed their respect for it, wishing him success with his club. Switzerland's next match is scheduled for September 26 against North Macedonia as part of the 2026-27 Nations League.
