K J Yesudas: Why the legendary singer now makes rare public appearances

Legendary playback singer K J Yesudas made a rare public appearance in Dallas, Texas, marking his return to the stage after years of limited visibility. The 86-year-old, known as 'Gaanagandharvan' or the Celestial Singer, attended the Kerala Association of Dallas' golden jubilee celebrations. Yesudas inaugurated the event, greeted the Malayali community on Onam, and performed on stage, singing lines from Sree Narayana Guru’s Jathi Bhedam Matha Dwesham and the popular Malayalam song Keralam Keralam Kelikottuyarunna Keralam.

The appearance was particularly significant due to Yesudas' long absence from public life, even in his home state of Kerala. In a 2024 interview, Yesudas attributed this lack of presence to the COVID-19 pandemic, which kept him away for over two years. His extended stay in the United States has also limited his participation in Kerala events. Despite his reduced public appearances, Yesudas remains a treasured cultural figure in Kerala and across India.

A veteran Indian singer, Yesudas began his career in the early 1960s and has since recorded thousands of songs in multiple languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and devotional music. He has won multiple National Film Awards and other prestigious accolades, including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan. His distinctive voice and contributions to Indian music and culture have earned him the respect and admiration of generations of listeners.
