Jazz Orchestra Kuala Lumpur gives big-band music a fresh local spin

In Kuala Lumpur, a new jazz orchestra called Jazz Orchestra Kuala Lumpur (JOKL) has emerged to provide local musicians with an opportunity to play in a big-band setting. Co-founded by Peter Hupperich, a German who has lived in Malaysia for 28 years, and Edwin Wong, the orchestra currently comprises over 20 Malaysian and international musicians. JOKL aims to create a musical family where members can learn, perform, and showcase their talents through various styles of jazz and contemporary music.

The orchestra's repertoire features a diverse range of musical genres, including jazz, swing, Latin, funk, soul, and pop. Rather than simply replicating traditional big-band arrangements, JOKL incorporates its unique "JOKL twist," which sees the musicians infusing popular songs with modern beats and arrangements. For example, they have performed "Ain't No Sunshine" with a techno groove or transformed an Alicia Keys song into a Latin number.

Despite its members' varied backgrounds, JOKL emphasizes the importance of passion, commitment, and a willingness to learn. Hupperich notes that the orchestra is not exclusive to professional musicians, as long as they possess the right attitude and can read music. The group collaborates with Malaysian arrangers to create exclusive compositions tailored specifically for JOKL, further contributing to the orchestra's evolving sound.

Looking ahead, Hupperich envisions JOKL becoming a recognized name for big-band music across Malaysia and the region. The orchestra's next performance will take place on September 12 at Robert’s Theatre @ The Campus in Ampang, where they will present "Viva La Fiesta - A Celebration of Latin Music & Dance." This event will feature vocalist Joshua Gui, dancers from MY DanceSport Academy, and veteran percussionist Steve Thornton, showcasing Latin rhythms mixed with contemporary grooves and a full big-band horn section.
