Hundreds rally at Israeli embassy in Bangkok to demand foreigners respect Thai laws

Hundreds of people gathered outside Israel's embassy in Bangkok on Thursday, demanding foreigners honor Thailand's laws and customs. The protest was sparked by growing frustration over disrespectful behavior by tourists, particularly Israeli visitors. Protest leader Sondhi Limthongkul, a media mogul and political activist, delivered an open letter to Israel's Ambassador to Thailand, Alona Fisher-Kamm, demanding respect for Thai laws and culture.

Fisher-Kamm met with Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow to address the issues and discuss possible solutions.

During a Facebook video message, Israeli embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Rami Teplitskiy acknowledged the negative sentiments about Israeli tourists in Thailand. He stated that the embassy would continue working to foster a friendly relationship and ensure mutual respect. Thai agencies are cooperating to resolve the issues, and Israeli visitors to Thailand will receive official travel guidance emphasizing the importance of respecting Thai laws and culture.

The tourism industry plays a significant role in Thailand's economy, generating about $1.2 billion for the country last year from Israeli visitors. Over 277,000 Israelis traveled to Thailand in the first eight months of 2026, a 7% increase from the same period in 2025. High-profile incidents include an Israeli man's deportation from Thailand after a zoo owner's threat and a viral video showing a confrontation between a Thai woman and a group of Italian students on a Bangkok train.

While the focus has been on Israelis, other nationalities like French and Italians have also faced similar treatment due to their behavior in the country.
