How Josh Berry navigated impossible odds to stay in NASCAR Cup

Josh Berry's journey in NASCAR Cup has been far from easy, but his determination has allowed him to overcome seemingly impossible odds. As a member of Wood Brothers Racing, Berry faced a bleak summer in May, finishing only 25th in 11 races with three DNFs. Rumors of a potential landing spot for reigning O'Reilly Series champion Jesse Love proved true, leading to a move that required Berry to secure funding and sponsorship for himself.

The thought of returning to his old team, JR Motorsports, was not a realistic option for Berry, who had no funding or avenue to perform his way into another Cup Series job. The low point of his summer came when he started at the back of the field due to a qualifying rainout at North Wilkesboro, despite having one of the fastest cars in practice.

A mistake by teammate Christopher Bell further compounded Berry's situation, resulting in a crash and race retirement. Since that fateful moment, Berry's performance has improved, finishing no worse than ninth over the past six races. Berry attributes his turnaround to the encouragement he received from his peers after a particularly aggressive race at New Hampshire.

He has not changed his preparation methods, merely adjusting the level of aggression he brings to each race. Berry's improved performance coincided with an overall boost in speed across the Team Penske and Penske-adjacent stable. Both Legacy Motor Club and team principal Jimmie Johnson see Berry as a catalyst to elevate their team and envision a future where Berry fits into their culture.

Berry acknowledges that blaming himself for DNFs can be unfair at times, as car issues and other external factors may be at play. Nevertheless, Berry remains excited about the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead with his new team.
